| Low Enrollment Forces Cancellation of Fairlee Great Triathlon | ||

(From Race Director, Rich Havens on April 26, 2009)...From 1985 to 2006, the Fairlee Great Triathlon emerged as one of the most popular and relaxing get-away triathlon experiences in the northeast. The beautiful and moderately challenging race course, embracing community and enthusiastic volunteers combined to make this a must-do event on many a triathlete's summer race schedule. During 2007 and 2008 while Time Out! Productions took pause in directing 'Fairlee' to cater to other event opportunities, I fielded a significant level of correspondence from athletes calling for its return. This past winter, based on the athlete requests and my own personal desire to return 'Fairlee' to the Tour, I decided to submit permits for an August 2 staging of this wonderful event. Since February, 'Fairlee' has been showcased on our website and within New England and northeast calendar listings and race ads. Relative to the 2009 New England Triathlon Tour, since the March 1st opening of the entry form link on our website, I am pleased to report a healthy entrant registration for our Cape Cod Sprint races. Yet, up through April 26, 'Fairlee' has only captured the interest of 49 persons. As you can imagine, I am quite disappointed by the numbers. The Fairlee Great Triathlon has been a personal favorite of mine since I started it in 1985. When I elected to return it to the fold this year I expected an overwhelming embracement by the triathlon community. That has not happened to the degree needed to convince me that we could return this great race to the stature it enjoyed just a few short years ago. Fearing that the 'Fairlee' enrollment pace will remain sluggish, I have made the extremely difficult decision to abandon further efforts to conduct the race for 2009. Please know that this decision is upsetting to me, as I am heart broken to let go on an event that has given so much pleasure to me, my production team and thousands of triathletes for over two decades. |
