Race courses are normally open to traffic. Learn to ride with
cars. Ride cautiously and remember...you will rarely win the battle
against a one-ton piece of moving metal. Again, work to eventually
cover the distance of your upcoming race. Practice spinning. If
you feel the legs burning and the pedals revolving slowly, you are
in too high of a gear. Move to a gear that allows your legs to spin
at 80 to 90 revolutions per minute or higher. Remember, you still
have a run to do after the bike. Once comfortable at the race distance,
try going up to double the distance slowly on some training days.
On others, find a deserted road and perform sprint drills for speed
at shorter distances. You may wish to hook up with organized groups
that conduct weekday rides. Always wear a helmet...you will never
race in a Time Out! New England Triathlon Tour event without one!
Stretch completely after your ride.
