Race Director
About the Director
Rich Havens entered a triathlon on
the urging of his sister Liz (who you might see at NE Triathlon
Tour races). Coming from a running background...with marginal
biking ability...and virtually no swimming background, Rich
completed the very first Hyannis Sprint Triathlon in June of
1983. Nearly last out of the water, Rich passed a few bikers and
ran like the wind finishing 67th overall. He then set sights on
the 1.2-mile swim - 24.8-mile bike - 9.3-mile run USTS
event...where he held his own there too! Rich was hooked. In
1984, the urge got stronger...and he finished the Cape Cod
Endurance 'Ironman' with friend Larry Gagnon in 12 hours. In
1985, Rich left his hotel career and joined DMSE as Executive
Director of the New England Triathlon Series (24 years and going
strong!). He has completed four Ironman-distance races and in
1987 completed a solo trans-continental triathlon (5,600 miles
in 68 days). Since 1985, Rich has directed over 200 triathlons,
road races and other events...is Finish Area Coordinator for the
BAA Boston Marathon...and owns/operates
Time Out! Productions.
He is
Happily Married to Rosemarie (you'll see her coordinating
race registrations...and Rich, when he gets out of hand). Busy
with business and other stuff, Rich manages a splash, spin and
jog every now and then.
