Swim Training

Most triathlons are conducted in open water. This means no black lane line like the one found in the bottom of your YMCA pool. The more times you can swim in a pond, lake or ocean, the more prepared you will be for actual race conditions. BUT, the pool is a great place to start...and to develop speed and stroke technique. Ask pool management about Master's Swim instruction. Your goal is to eventually complete the distance of your first triathlon. Focus on stroke efficiency...not on speed. You do not want to fatigue. Practice traditional free-style (overhand) strokes. Mix in breast strokes for variety. First-Timers may feel more comfortable with keeping the head out of the water...the breast stroke works well this way. Eventually, work in rhythmic breathing (head in water). Have someone watch your stroke.
